$2.1 million in marijuana seized at beach north of Santa Cruz

A California state lifeguard patrolling area beaches noticed a 35-foot Panga-style boat and four men acting suspiciously at Shark Tooth Beach (also known as Davenport Cove and Shark Fin Cove) just north of Bonny Doon around 9:40 a.m. Saturday, according to the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team, which includes officers from multiple local law enforcement agencies. The story was reported in The Santa Cruz Sentinel. As the men fled, the lifeguard called for assistance. The Santa Cruz Sentinel states:

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, Cal Fire, UCSC police, California Highway Patrol, Capitola police, Santa Cruz Harbor Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard and special agents from Homeland Security Investigations responded.

Officials found and seized 175 bundles of marijuana valued at $2.1 million, and arrested Silviano Davalos Jr., 30, of San Luis, Ariz; Jose Luis Martinez-Ruiz, 34, of Los Angeles; Jose Martin Garcia, 30, of Los Angeles; and Alex Cerna, 24, of Los Angeles, said Anti-Crime Team Commander Mario Sulay. The four men were booked into County Jail on suspicion of transportation of marijuana.

An estimated 1,200 pounds of marijuana was seized. Authorities believe that the marijuana was smuggled from Mexico. The Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol recovered the 35-foot Panga-type boat, which was outfitted with a large-capacity fuel tank.

Just another little “safety warning” to families, sunbathers, naturists, surfers, swimmers, and photographers…. :-)
