Mountain Fire: at 14,400 acres, hundreds of homes ordered evacuated

As the Mountain Fire continues to burn out of control in the San Bernardino National Forest, hundreds of households received evacuation orders this evening. Officials issued evacuation notices for Idyllwild, Fern Valley and adjacent communities, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Earlier, evacuation orders had been sent to Apple Canyon and the Andreas Canyon Club area south of Palm Springs. Smoke from the 14,400-acre fire caused the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue a smoke advisory for areas that included Hemet, San Jacinto Valley, Banning Pass, Anza, and the Coachella Valley.

The Mountain Fire has destroyed at least 20 dwellings, including mobile homes, residences and a commercial building. The 2,200 firefighters on the ground are assisted by 16 water-dropping helicopters and 10 air tankers that drop fire retardant, the Forest Service said.

The fight to control the wildfire, which was 10% contained last night, has been complicated by temperatures in the upper 90s and humidities as low as 5%.
