Internet Explorer zero-day flaw was patched by Microsoft today

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is still advising computer users to disable Java on their Web browsers.

Even after an Oracle update….

What can I say? :-)

When I worked for VeriSign (BEFORE VeriSign got hacked :-) ), DHS was using Windows! :-)

It probably still is!

Late last month, a vulnerability [Microsoft Security Advisory (2794220), potentially allowing remote code execution] was discovered that could allow attackers to gain control of a Windows computer (where have we heard THAT before? :-) ) running one of the older versions (6 through 8) of Internet Explorer (IE) by directing users to malicious Web sites. According to Microsoft, today’s update will fully resolve the issue. (Again, where have we heard THAT before? :-) )

CNET news said:

Security professionals were wondering when Microsoft would resolve this flaw, since the company did not address the problem in last week’s Patch Tuesday rollout. But a fix for the bug was already in the works.

Scheduled for rollout at 10 a.m. PT, the fix will be available as a critical update, meaning it will automatically be applied to any Windows computers with Automatic Updates turned on. Otherwise, users will need to install the update manually through Windows Update.

Manually? Ah, THERE’S the rub! :-)

CNET news goes on….

Internet Explorer 9 and 10 are immune to this particular flaw, so users of older versions of the browser will need to install the update.

Not to worry… I am reasonably confident that IE 9 and 10 have plenty of issues of their own! 😉

If it seems like U.S. government agencies are holding Java and Microsoft products to different standards, well… maybe they ARE! :-)

Ask the Iranians. (1)
