Freezin’ Season

Although readers in other parts of the country and world, who have REALLY cold weather, :-) may laugh – the San Francisco Bay Area will have a “cold snap” that will last into Saturday, and which is significantly colder than the the usual weather! A weather system from the Gulf of Alaska will bring with it a 40% chance of precipitation (showers) on Thursday morning, according to Steve Anderson, a forecaster with the national weather service. SFGate.com says:

“Cold air is going to be following right behind it, coming right from Canada, so it’ll be cold, breezy and dry through the weekend,” Anderson said.

Lows in the North and East Bay valleys will dip into the 20s, and even areas near the bay will see overnight temperatures around 40 degrees. Highs won’t escape the low 50s anywhere, and a blustery wind will make it seem colder, Anderson said.

“No need for umbrellas,” he said. “Just remember to dress warm.”

A freeze warning, with temperatures below 32 Fahrenheit for several hours before dawn on Thursday, is in effect for Napa, Sonoma, and Marin counties and portions of the East Bay for Thursday morning. A frost warning, with below-freezing temperatures predicted for a short time, is in place for the South Bay.

More important are the effects of the cold weather on PEOPLE:

People can also seek refuge from the unusually cold weather at winter shelters. The San Francisco Interfaith Council has a rotating schedule of churches that provide shelter from Thanksgiving to the end of February. St. Boniface on Golden Gate Avenue is open nightly from 6:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. until Feb. 3.

In Oakland, St. Mary’s Center provides a nightly winter shelter program through April 30 at 925 Brockhurst St. Contra Costa County provides a rotating winter night shelter program through May. People interested in a shelter space can call (925) 435-2074.
