MBARI
Founded in 1987 by David Packard (of Hewlett-Packard), the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) (1) is a private not-for-profit oceanographic research center located in Moss Landing (1). The Institute furthers marine research through the peer efforts of scientists and engineers and is affiliated with the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Monterey Bay is one of the most biologically diverse bodies of water in the world. Moss Landing is at the head of the submarine Monterey Canyon, one of the deepest underwater canyons off the continental United States, up to 4000 meters deep. The approximately 220 scientists, engineers and operations/administrative staff propose and execute innovative studies in the ocean sciences.
The institute has defined six major goals:
- Identify important areas of marine science where research progress is limited by lack of appropriate technology.
- Develop sophisticated systems for investigating aspects of the marine environment and its inhabitants where high scientific potential exists.
- Meet the highest possible performance standards for the operation of its equipment and technological systems.
- Conduct high-quality, innovative research that maximizes effective management and use of all MBARI assets.
- Develop, in collaboration with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, creative programs that maximize the educational value of MBARI’s research results.
- Transfer research results, technology, and operational techniques to the marine science community worldwide.
MBARI operates three research vessels: the R/V Western Flyer with its ROV, Tiburon, the R/V Point Lobos (1) with its ROV, Ventana, and the R/V Zepher, which deploys MBARI’s AUVs.
