Charles Manson at 74

The 40th anniversary of the “Manson family” (Tate/LaBianca) killings in August 1969 is yet to come, but California corrections officials released an updated photo of a balding and graying Charles Manson at 74, with his characteristic forehead swastika, yesterday. The photo was taken at the California State Prison in Corcoran, about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles, where Manson is serving a life term.

Another Ohio boy who came to California, Charles Manson had a particularly disturbing childhood and history, which is detailed in the Wikipedia article.

The pregnant actress Sharon Tate and seven others were killed in two nights of violence in August of 1969. Along with Manson, four others were convicted of murder and other charges: Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten (19 at the time), and Charles “Tex” Watson. All have been up for parole a number of times over the last 40 years and have always been denied. Atkins, who is terminally ill, was denied compassionate release from prison in July of 2008. The murders were supposed to precipitate “Helter Skelter,” believed by Manson to be an apocalyptic race war that he named after the Beatles song. Helter Skelter incorporated both Beatles song lyrics and the Book of Revelations. The Wikipedia article provides detailed descriptions of Manson’s interpretations of both Beatles lyrics and the Book of Revelations passages. “Helter Skelter” became the name of the book that the prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi (and Curt Gentry) wrote about the murders.

In May of 2008, the Inyo County ranch where Manson and followers once lived was the site of a search for bodies, but nothing was found.

Anniversary? For killings? Only in America. And who cares if Manson spends most of his time alone?
I don’t.
