Mount Hood climber rescued after Facebook post!
Yeah, it’s good for something, after all! 😉 And of course, so is iPhone!
An Oregon man, Jeff Kish, got stuck in a sudden blizzard on Mount Hood, Oregon’s tallest peak, yesterday afternoon. He updated his Facebook status from his iPhone:
Half an hour later, Kish posted a screenshot to Facebook with his GPS coordinates and this message: “Ok guys, I have no idea where I am, other than right on the edge of some gnarly cliff. Too far east or west?”
(Yes, we really say “gnarly” out here.)
Search-and-rescue folks used the GPS information and phone calls in looking for Kish, and they wound up at the bottom of a cliff.
Kish was at the top.
Mark Morford, Portland Mountain Rescue spokesman, told The Oregonian newspaper: “…but for him having a cellphone, it’s highly improbable that we would have found him.”
Kish, who had previously hiked the length of the Pacific Crest Trail, posted a lengthy version of the events Thursday afternoon. He admitted “things got really bad for me up there.” He concluded:
“I must admit I was getting pretty scared toward the end of my wait for rescue, but in the end, I still maintain – you can’t let fears dictate the way you live your life. The biggest rewards always come with some risk.”
Kish, of course, is quite right, and I am personally glad that he is still with us.
