Bond. James Bond.

The public’s response to the new James Bond movie, “Skyfall,” has doubled my desire to see it soon!

The film, the 23rd in the franchise’s history, took in a franchise-record $87.8 million during the opening weekend in the U.S. The Santa Cruz Sentinel post by AP Movie Writer, David Germain, says:

According to distributor Sony, adding $2.2 million from Thursday night previews at large-format theaters, “Skyfall” has taken in $90 million domestically.

That lifts the worldwide total for “Skyfall” to around half a billion dollars once its weekend haul is counted overseas, where the film began rolling out in late October. As of last Thursday, “Skyfall” had rung up nearly $350 million internationally.

“Skyfall,” starring Daniel Craig as Bond, surpassed the $67.5 million U.S. debut of “Quantum of Solace” (2008), which held the previous record for the franchise, and “Skyfall” more than doubled the $40.8 million U.S. debut of Craig’s first outing as Bond, “Casino Royale” (2006).

Yes, I have seen ALL of the James Bond movies (including all of the tongue-in-cheek features starring Roger Moore), and (although I had my initial misgivings before watching Casino Royale), I find Craig to be a very good Bond, although Sean Connery is still my favorite. I own a collection of some, but not all, of the Bond movies. I have also read ALL of the original Bond books written by Ian Fleming (and none by the other authors), which I obtained in paperback in a single purchase at a used book store on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin, where I attended graduate school.

(Note added November 19, 2012: My wife and I saw “Skyfall” on Saturday. It IS THAT GOOD – perhaps the best Bond feature in recent years. I love it when folks spend money on screenwriters as well as special effects! If you love Bond movies as much as I do, this film is a “must-see.”)
