“Stupid is…
… as stupid does.” Forrest Gump‘s mother
Pentagon officials disclosed today that two Iranian warplanes, Soviet-made SU-25 jets known as Frogfoots, fired upon an unarmed Predator drone in international airspace over the Persian Gulf last week, on November 1, five days before the U.S. presidential election.
The drone was not hit.
Little stated that the Iranian jets “fired multiple rounds” but MISSED the Predator. The SU-25s carry cannon for supporting ground troops and are not expecially suited for air-to-air combat. Iran’s territorial limit extends 12 nautical miles from its shores. The Predator was flying 16 nautical miles off the Iranian coast and did not stray into Iranian airspace.
The U.S. military conducts regular surveillance of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, which are critical to shipping routes for petroleum products to international destinations.
Let’s hope that similarly stupid acts do not occur in the future.
