California Republicans avoid Tampa…

… and it’s got nothing to do with Isaac, which, like global warming and drought, seems not to like Republicans.

Elizabeth Emken, the Republican who will oppose California incumbent Senator Diane Feinstein in November, has never MET Mitt Romney and doesn’t spend a lot of time thinking about him. According to SFgate.com:

Emken thinks she has a shot at winning the election precisely because she is not the pick of the GOP establishment.

“We’ve had millionaires and billionaires and CEOs and movie stars,” said Emken in a not-so-subtle swipe at former top-of-the ticket Repubs Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina and Arnold Schwarzenegger. “We need folks running.”

Emken won’t attend the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., this week. “I don’t think there’s any concrete reason I should go,” she said.

In California, Democrats represent around 43% of voters, as compared with 30% represented by Republicans. Democrats hold every statewide office and control both houses of the Legislature.

Not that they do a very good JOB of it…! 😉 Or even an ADEQUATE job of it….

You can read the SFgate article about a number of California Republicans, including an honest man who CAN compromise, former Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado, a man whom the California Republican Party would not ENDORSE in the June primary election – no matter, he won ANYWAY!

Intelligent Americans want representatives in Congress who can govern, and to govern means to work with the other party and to be able to compromise. Intelligent Californians want pretty much the same thing.

Which California Republicans will be getting their feet wet in Tampa? 😉 According to SFgate.com:

Elizabeth Emken
(U.S. Senate candidate)
No. “I don’t think there’s any concrete reason I should go.”

Kim Vann
(Candidate, Third Congressional District)
“No. I need to walk precincts.”

Abel Maldonado
(Candidate, 24th Congressional District)
No. he’s campaigning.

Tony Strickland
(Candidate, 26th Congressional District)
No, the Legislature is in session.

Kevin McCarthy
(GOP House whip)
You betcha.

California once sent Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan to the Presidency – yep, everything from “I am not a crook” to Death Valley Days. Now, only 30% of registered voters identify themselves as Republicans. The GOP must be doing SOMETHING wrong in California (we KNOW that the Democrats are! 😉 ). As the SFgate article notes, California is not the “bluest state” (Rhode Island) but somewhere in the middle, with the “reddest” state being Wyoming. California has a large and growing number of voters who decline to state a party preference.

My comment is:  with the way California state government and Congress are BOTH being run, can you BLAME them? 😉
