Burglary suspect nabbed by Steve Jobs’ Macintoshes!

Don’t fool with the Mac! :-)

Burglars are going to have to adopt a new code: “Steal everything but the Apple products!” The Palo Alto home of the late Steve Jobs, which was undergoing renovations at the time, was burglarized on July 17, and $60,000 in computers and other items were taken, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office. Kariem McFarlin, a 35-year-old man from Alameda, was arrested and charged with the burglary and for selling stolen property, according to CBS News. McFarlin is being held with bail set at $500,000 pending a court hearing that is set for August 20.

Ah yes, but HOW did he get caught?

“Easily,” it turns out! 😉

After some of the stolen computers were plugged in, the Macintoshes (I refuse to call them “PCs,” as the CNET author did!) communicated with servers at Apple to receive needed upgrades, according to The Daily. THAT activity alerted Apple security and Palo Alto police, who traced the Macs! :-) Sweet!

(To my server friends at Apple – nice job, pass it on!)

McFarlin led police to a storage locker, where they found Steve Jobs’ wallet, some credit cards, and a letter. According to the article in The Daily, McFarlin did not know that it was Steve Jobs’ house until he read the letter. McFarlin reportedly has confessed to the crime, saying that he robbed the home because he was in “dire straits” and living out of his car. He apparently said that he wants to send a letter of apology to Jobs’ family.
