California unemployment at 10.1% in January

California’s unemployment reached 10.1% in January 2009, up from the revised figure of 8.7% in December 2008. (The unrevised figure for December was 9.3%.) The January figure was announced today by the Employment Development Department.

According to Stephen Levy, senior economist for Center for the Continuing Study of the California Economy, unemployment had not reached double digits since June of 1983.

The unemployment rate of the United States as a whole is now at 7.6%.

Hang in there.
