Pinterest moved to San Francisco today!

Today, Pinterest, the online photo board for food, hobbies, fashion, people, places, you-name-it, moved its corporate headquarters from Palo Alto to San Franciso! The SFGate.com article has a photo and names of the Pinterest team in its new office space in the SoMa (South of Market) district. Pinterest reportedly has plans for expansion in the same South of Market building.

Pinterest spokesperson, Barry Schnitt noted that their San Francisco location at 572 Seventh St., at Brannan Street, puts them “in good company,” in the same neighborhood as the social games company, Zynga, and the online room rental service Airbnb. Pinterest signed a short-term lease at its new offices and transferreed its corporate flag from Palo Alto.

San Francisco mayor Ed Lee announced the move:

“I am thrilled to welcome Pinterest to the ‘Innovation Capital of the World,’ and am pleased that our efforts to attract and retain the industry’s best and most innovative companies are working,” a statement from Lee said.

Schnitt said that Pinterest is finalizing plans for long-term home in the South of Market area but is not ready to give details. A source that is familiar with the move said that after looking at the former Potrero Hill offices of the San Francisco Bay Guardian and the old Hamm’s brewery building on Bryant Street, Pinterest plans to take over its new space, part of a 48,000-square-foot building at 808 Brannan St.

Pinterest Chief Executive Officer Ben Silbermann said, “We’re pleased to now call one of the world’s great cities home.

Well, even with my limited experience of the world’s great cities (which each surely have something unique to offer), I have to say that San Francisco is my favorite big city so far.

Favorable real estate prices may have been another factor in the move. The average rental in the SoMa district is $50 per square foot vs. $75 per square foot in Palo Alto. According to SFGate.com:

Pinterest publicly launched in May 2011 and became the fastest stand-alone website to hit 10 million members, according to digital business tracker comScore. The site has also been the fastest-growing social-networking site and had about 19 million unique visitors in March, comScore said.
