Quote for today

I was in a room today in which a double row of quotations topped two walls.

One of the quotations, though metaphorical, still offers an exscellent suggestion for a photographer or painter:

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust (French novelist 1871 – 1922)

One of the preparations that I make for a photographic “shoot” is almost entirely mental – to put myself in a frame of mind that is receptive to the light, form, and beauty that surrounds me. Much of the time, we all pass through our surroundings without “taking it all in.” Much of the time, it would probably be a “sensory overload” :-) to “take it all in.”

What could be mind-boggling for everyday life is still a real asset for shorter periods of time spent painting or taking photographs.

Take a look at an “old landscape” with “new eyes” and see what M. Proust meant.
