“Don’t go near the water…

Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay, California

Our water’s going bad.” (YouTube video – “Don’t Go Near The Water”) – The Beach Boys, from “Surf’s Up” (1971)

California officials have updated a Web site that helps the public assess the “health” of California rivers, streams, and lakes. The Web site itself, “My Water Quality,” was activated in 2009 with information about the consumption of fish from bodies of water and whether it is healthful to swim in certain bodies of water.

“The update released Monday aims to provide a broader assessment of aquatic health by analyzing water quality data, habitat condition, stream hydrology, channel form and other factors.

The website, at www.cawaterquality.net, provides an interactive map with data on individual water bodies across the state.”

A state law in 2006 REQUIRED  the assessment, which is guided by an independent monitoring council that includes nonprofit groups.
