The Golden Gate Bridge turns 75!

The Golden Gate Bridge from the south

Today marks 75 years since the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937! Crowds were comparatively thin during much of the day, perhaps because of a damp wind and fog. As I write this, fireworks are expected to begin at 9:30 PM, in 28 minutes. The sun broke through in the afternoon, and by 7 PM, there was not a cloud in the sky – perfect fireworks weather, if a little chilly!

Today, THOUSANDS walked or biked across the bridge. The bridge is closed to automobile traffic as I write this, from 9-10 PM, for the fireworks exhibition. According to SFGate.com:

The festivities stretched from Fort Point to the Marina Green, with several stages of live music, food booths and numerous exhibits. Among the more popular attractions was a vintage car show on Crissy Field, an homage to the bridge’s ostensible purpose: getting cars from San Francisco to Marin and visa versa.

As for me, I spent the day at Art in the Vineyard in Livermore, in the Cheshire Cat Photo booth!

A dark side of the history of the Golden Gate Bridge was presented by the Bridge Rail Foundation, which works to prevent bridge suicides and which displayed 1,558 pairs of shoes to represent the estimated number of people who have committed suicide jumping from the bridge since 1937, roughly one every two weeks.

Today, the San Francisco Boys Chorus sang “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” on Crissy Field, with the bridge in the background.
