Newport Beach, CA to Ensenada, Mexico Regatta: 3 dead and 1 missing

Regatta, Santa Barbara, California

The Aegean, a 37-foot sailboat in the sailing regatta from Newport Beach, California to Ensenada, Mexico DISAPPEARED today. Race officials called the Coast Guard. Then, around 10 AM, vessels near the Coronado Islands, Mexico, reported seeing debris in the water. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a response boat were dispatched to search the area.

According to a U.S. Coast Guard news release, the bodies of three crew members of the Aegean were turned over to the San Diego County Corner this afternoon.

Coast Guard crews aboard a Jayhawk helicopter, a 45-foot Response Boat, and a C-130 Hercules aircraft as well as the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Otter, a Mexican Navy vessel and civilian vessels are searching for the remaining sailboat crew member.

Over 200 boats entered the Lexus Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race, which spans April 27-29.

The Coast Guard is currently reviewing the deaths of crew members of the Low Speed Chase, which was driven onto the rocks off the Farrallon Islands after two rogue waves swept the deck in a yacht race off Northern California.
