Dana Meadows, Yosemite
I placed Dana Meadows on the Home Page this week, because it typifies the kind of decision that photographers, who cannot be several places at the same time, have to make all of the time. For the shot of Dana Meadows, I was running out of light. It was a little past the peak of sunset color, and I was still taking photos here, at another spot on the Tioga Road, watching Mount Dana and Mount Gibbs turn orange at sunset. I had noted the location for the Dana Meadows shots, but did not know for sure what I would find when I reached there.
In some follow-up emails with my friend Robert at Apple, I discovered that it was exactly the same dilemma that he faced in photographing Horsetail Fall, at El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. Some other photographers had left in search of a better vantage point, only to return disappointed, too late to take photos where Robert had remained. And of course, there was snow, which makes photographers even slower! 
For me, the time spent in Dana Meadows meant that the descent from 9728 feet would occur on a twisty mountain road in the darkness, avoiding any wildlife along the way. We avoided hitting the deer and made the descent safely.
