“Coming into Los An-gel-es…

… bringing in a couple of Ki’s.” – Arlo Guthrie, “Coming into Los Angeles” (YouTube; Woodstock 1969)

Timing is EVERYTHING! 😉

Today, F-16 fighters intercepted a private plane carrying marijuana when it got too close to a helicopter that took U.S. President Barack Obama from Orange County to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). :-) The four-seat Cessna entered the restricted airspace at about 11 AM today when the military helicopter, designed Marine One, carried President Obama to LAX. Imagine the Cessna pilot’s surprise! 😉 Air traffic controllers tried repeatedly to contact the small plane, but the pilot did not respond. The F-16s were scrambled from March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County. Typically, aircraft are not allowed within 10 miles of any plane or helicopter carrying the President.

After the Cessna was forced down at Long Beach Airport, Long Beach police detained the pilot and found what law enforcement officers describe as “a large amount” of marijuana! The pilot’s identity was not released as the result of the ongoing drug investigation.

Pilots who violate airspace restricted for security reasons can face revocation of their flying certificates, FAA officials said. If illegal drugs are found onboard, the aircraft can be confiscated by law enforcement agencies.

After the morning fundraisers, President Obama left LAX at about 2:45 PM and flew to San Francisco. According to TV news playing in my family room right now, the President caused quite a stir by making an unexpected visit to a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown!

“It was not clear who was piloting the Cessna, which according to federal records was manufactured in 1961. The plane’s FAA registration lists the owner as David W. Major, 52, of Grover Beach, a town south of Pismo Beach in San Luis Obispo County.

Major holds a student pilot certificate issued in 2008, according to the FAA. He could not be reached for comment Thursday.”

Just another little incident to reinforce my belief in a watered-down Western-sort-of Karma…. :-)
