Six “game-changers” in photography
Robert Lachman mulled over the top advances in photography, since he started at the L.A. Times 37 years ago. He settled on this short list of SIX major advances, and notes how much photography has changed in such a relatively short time!
- Autofocus – The ridiculously fast autofocusing of today’s top DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) cameras is an incredible improvement – even if you DON’T have “aging eyes.”
- Digital Chip – Once the quality and speed (ISO) passed film, there was “no holding back!”
- Electronic Flash (Strobes) – “It seems like it was just yesterday when you had to calculate the distance of your subject to your flash to figure out the proper f-stop.”
- Fast motor drives – Once upon a time, you had to advance film, manually!
- Fast lenses – The use of internal focusing has given us the faster, lighter, and sharper lenses that we have today.
- LCD Review Screen – ‘Photographers looking at their LCD screen in between snaps has even created its own word, chimping. It’s not in the dictionary, but it is in Wikipedia, which says: “Chimping is a colloquial term used in digital photography (especially when using a digital single-lens reflex camera) to describe the habit of checking every photo on the camera display (LCD) immediately after capture.”’
If you are young enough not to remember some of the things Lachman discusses, you are lucky, indeed. Most of us are quite satisfied with developments in digital photography, and we have little desire to “go back!”
