John Travolta’s classic Mercedes found… in pieces!

Today, Los Angeles police Detective George Molina, who is part of a countrywide automobile theft task force, said that although two men who allegedly stole John Travolta‘s classic 1970 Mercedes 280 SL convertible were arrested, only PIECES of the car itself were found, on the chopping room floor, in December.

“They chopped up the car,” Molina said. “We have interior and some exterior body parts.”

Although the men apparently specialized in stealing classic cars for their expensive body parts, authorities say that the operation itself was not sophisticated. Last fall, officials got a break in the case when Santa Monica police got a tip in response to a flyer they released concerning Travolta’s car. The tip identified suspect Michael Green, which led to his arrest on December 6. Green was on probation for stealing jewelry from a Sears store, after he pleaded guilty, with priors. L.A. County prosecutors say that D.L. Rayford Jr. was also arrested in the case, has pleaded guilty to grand theft auto, and has been sentenced to 16 months in state prison.

John Travolta’s car was stolen in September when he parked it for 10 minutes in a residential neighborhood in Santa Monica. Detectives had obtained videos of the vehicle and suspects as the car was taken from the 1400 block of Berkeley Street (Google Map). Green told police, in December, that he had stolen Travolta’s car and a second car that was described as a 1962 Mercedes 220 SE. The other car was reported by LAPD in 2010 as being pushed off the 101 Freeway at Cahuenga Boulevard by a gold Chevy Cavalier. When police investigated, a suspect jumped out of the hot-wired Mercedes 220 SE and into the Cavalier and escaped. The Mercedes 220 SE was returned to its owner.

Travolta was not so fortunate with HIS classic Mercedes.
