Central Valley high school gets extra-long “snake break!”

About 500 Gustine High School students got an extra-long holiday break at Thanksgiving. They were sent home on November 16 when FIVE Northern Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus) were found on their campus in Gustine, MOST of the snakes were found in classrooms! (The L.A. Times link has a video.) Students were given the next two days off while the school was swept for snakes, and then the following week was a regularly scheduled break for Thanksgiving.

I wrote about the Central Valley city of Gustine while describing a day trip to Yosemite in 2010. The town has a strategically placed MacDonald’s along Highway 140. :-)

Students were allowed to return to school this Monday, after school officials declared the campus to be snake free.

The superintendent of the Gustine Unified School District now has to file paperwork with the State of California to determine whether students will have to make up the two missed days of class.
