Bigger village, same “idiots”

I have finally lived to see the day when the word “idiot” has become a euphemism, if not a “kindness.”

Senator Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri, used the “I” word to describe Wall Streeters who used the taxpayer bailout money to pay out $18 billion in bonuses, and she introduced a bill, which, if it becomes law, would prevent any employee from earning more than the President of the United States ($400,000 USD). The proposed compensation limit would include salaries, bonuses, and stock options.

She was probably being kind. An executive pay “cap” would probably not fit their swollen heads. :-)

President Obama was quoted by CNN as adding, “The American people understand we’ve got a big hole that we’ve got to dig ourselves out of, but they don’t like the idea that people are digging a bigger hole even as they’re being asked to fill it up.”

The same CNN article quotes former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani as defending corporate bonuses, claiming that cutting bonuses would create unemployment.

Probably. Not that it should….

Senator Claire McCaskill is quite right in going after one of the two things that Wall Street executives care about: their own lives, and money (and not necessarily in that order :-) ). When a group of people lacks any unselfish impulses, does not respond to criticism at any level, and lacks any pretenses of ethics or morality, it is necessary to reach that group through its greed.

Give them a pay cut, Congress. Put Rudy’s assertion to the test – the unemployment is going to happen anyway.

Or give the taxpayers a refund….
