“Everybody was Kung-Fu Fighting…”

Carl Douglas, “Kung-Fu Fighting” (YouTube video) (1)

Actually, Jiu-Jitsu….

Timing is everything. The attempted robbery of a Los Angeles motel was stopped “dead-in-its-tracks” by two experts in mixed martial arts from Oregon, who had arrived for the World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship in Long Beach! Los Angeles police commended Brent Alvarez, 33, and Billy Denney, 28, for their actions after struggling for several minutes to subdue Luis Rosales, 31, the alleged robber, who was armed with a loaded 9 mm handgun.

Alvarez owns a mixed martial arts studio in Eugene, Oregon. He and his student, Denney, had just gotten off the elevator, slightly before midnight, when they saw the suspect forcing the motel clerk to empty the cash drawer, at gunpoint. The robber shoved the handgun into his bag with the money.

Alvarez attempted to subdue the robber without hurting him. The suspect did not seem to want to hurt Alvarez, either, and kept insisting that he had robbed the motel for his daughter.

Alvarez said:

“He wasn’t trying to punch us; he just seemed like someone who had run out of options,” Alvarez said Friday evening. “I think back now and wonder what the hell was I doing? I should of hit him and knocked him out.”

Alvarez said that he eventually got the suspect in a body lock and chokehold, and the motel clerk called the police.

A security video of the struggle at the motel in the 300 block of North Vermont Avenue was posted on YouTube and on the police department Web site.
