LA: Stolen cherry-red 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo found
Stolen in 1988, that is! 
A classic collector’s Porsche 930 Turbo, stolen 23 years ago, was recovered by federal inspectors in Los Angeles as it was getting shipped to the Netherlands! U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered that the car was stolen when they checked the vehicle identification number (VIN).
According to Marlene Figueroa, supervisor of the agency’s outbound enforcement team at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport came up as stolen in Las Vegas in 1988! The car was missing its engine. The owner is listed as the insurance company that paid off the original owner when the vehicle was stolen.
Somehow, the little red Porsche 930 was registered, since 1988, in New Jersey, Florida, and Washington state, without being flagged as stolen! It’s unclear whether the private owner who was exporting the car to the Netherlands knew that the car was stolen.
With its engine, the Porsche would be worth more than $70,000.
In the 10 months ending in August 2011, officers at the port have seized 51 vehicles and another 49 engines being sent overseas, including 24 that were stolen, 63 that were undeclared, seven that were undervalued, and six with fraudulent documents!
Each day, 500 – 1,000 cars are exported from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach!
