Thousands of LA area AT&T wireless customers without service

In the Los Angeles area, THOUSANDS of AT&T wireless customers were without service tonight as HUNDREDS of AT&T’s cell towers went down, according to both AT&T and media reports!

In a Twitter statement, the company explained:

“Los Angeles area AT&T customers may have issues with wireless service.”

“We are working now to resolve. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

AT&T officials informed KCBS and KCAL-TV that about 1,000 cell towers were out of service and that the problems were not expected to be resolved until 2:30 AM Sunday. Customers had complained of difficulty placing and receiving cell calls, but the extent of the problem had been unknown.

(Note added September 25, 2011: The outages were likely caused by mechanical problems with switching equipment that routes calls, according to AT&T spokeswoman Georgia Taylor. AT&T says that it will consider refunds for customers affected by the service outage on a case-by-case basis. :-) )
