Queen Wilhelmina Windmill in Golden Gate Park
In 1903, two Dutch-style windmills were built at the extreme west end of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. These windmills pumped water throughout the park, both for irrigation and for various water features of the park. The north windmill (the “Dutch windmill”) has been completely restored and is next to a flower garden that was a gift of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. The garden is planted with tulip bulbs for winter display and has other types of flowers at other times of the year. Murphy’s windmill (the south windmill) is currently being restored.
