Cal State San Bernardino professor accused of leading outlaw motorcycle gang

Stephen J. Kinzey, a 43-year-old professor of kinesiology at California State University, San Bernardino, has been accused of leading a local chapter of the Devils Diciples outlaw motorcycle gang and a methamphetamine drug operation. Nine suspected mid- and street-level dealers were arrested by authorities shortly after raiding Kinzey’s home, where they allegedly found more than a pound of methamphetamine, rifles, handguns, leather biker vests and other biker paraphernaia, and body armor! During the raid on August 26, detectives also arrested Kinzey’s girlfriend, Holly V. Robinson, 33, a 2005 Cal State University, San Bernardino graduate, on suspicion of selling methamphetamine. She is accused of being Kinzey’s business partner in the sales, and she has been released on bail. All of the recovered firearms were unregistered.

The drugs were allegedly sold through a network of dealers in San Bernardino, Redlands, Highland, and Mentone. An investigation into possible sales on the Cal State campus is continuing. Cal State, San Bernardino President Albert K. Karnig has promised the full cooperation of the university.

Two lawyers contacted by Kinzey have called the office of Deputy District Attorney Steven D. Sanchez to find out what the bail would be if the professor turned himself in. Bail has not been set because Kinzey is still a fugitive. He is considered armed and dangerous. His father, Hank Kinzey of Rochester Hills, Michigan, was concerned when his son told him years ago that he had joined a “motorcycle club.” The senior Kinzey is quoted by the L.A. Times:

“My son is a Christian. He’s a good father of a good little girl,” the elder Kinzey said. “My son doesn’t drink. My son doesn’t smoke. I don’t get it. He’s a Ph.D.”

Stephen Kinzey has taught at Cal State University, San Bernardino for 10 years. He has a doctorate from the University of Toledo in Ohio,  a master’s degree from Indiana State University, and a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. Stephen Kinzey apparently led a model life, chairing academic committees and tweeting his concerns about childhood obesity. He lived with his girlfriend in the upscale East Highlands Ranch community, where neighbors described them as reserved and friendly, although occasionally their driveway was filled with the Harley-Davidson motorcycles of friends. However, there were never loud parties of motorcycles “fired up” at night! Kinzey and Robinson’s two-story, clay-tile-roof home was immaculate, with flowers out front and palm trees on either side.

Besides allegedly being president of the mountain chapter of the Devils Diciples motorcycle club, county records show that Kinzey organized the San Bernardino-based Saxon motorcycle club in 2006. According to the L.A. Times:

‘An article posted on the national website of the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club — whose members were immortalized by the 1953 movie “The Wild One” starring Marlon Brando — described how Kinzey revived the Los Angeles area chapter of the Boozefighters club. Kinzey is referred to as “Skinz.”‘

At a news conference in San Bernardino, Sheriff Rod Hoops said:

“To have an associate professor who is a member of the Devils Diciples and allegedly dealing methamphetamine is quite alarming. I mean, it’s unusual to say the least.”
