Another California hero
A 17-year-old student, who was beaten nearly to death by six alleged gang members for intervening after one of the men punched a 16-year-old girl in the face, is recovering in a Walnut Creek hospital.
Bryant Lee, a basketball player and student at Jesse Bethel High in Vallejo, is recovering slowly from head injuries after the attack by five adults (four of the suspects charged are brothers, two sets of twins) and a 16-year-old juvenile.
The attack was captured on one of the approximately 60 surveillance cameras that had been installed at the high school. TV news stated that the number of police stationed on campus had been reduced.
The six suspects in the assault have been arrested and charged with attempted murder. Amazingly, some of those charged have already been released on bail, according to one TV news report.
A recent attack at Marina Middle School in San Francisco by a 14-year-old girl with scissors, on one of her classmates, allegedly occurred in the presence of three adults who did not intervene. A classmate tried to break up the attack but could not.
Bryant Lee of Vallejo showed great courage in acting to protect a fellow student. We wish him a complete and speedy recovery from serious injuries sustained during the vicious assault.
(Note added February 7, 2009: A fund has been established for Bryant Lee, who [at least on January 24th when the article below was published] was still in serious but stable condition at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
