Rembrandt’s “The Judgment” stolen in Marina del Rey

Rembrandt van Rijn‘s “The Judgment” was stolen from a private art exhibition being held in the Ritz Calton Marina del Rey on Saturday. The painting belongs to the Linearis Institute (based in Hercules, CA), which sometimes shows its works in upscale hotels. The pen-and-ink artwork, which measures approximately 11-by-6 inches, is valued at $250,ooo or more.

The work was hung in the hotel’s lobby and was stolen between 10:20 and 10:35 PM. Los Angeles County Sheriff‘s investigators are reviewing hotel surveillance video for information to identify those involved in the theft, which appears to have been very well planned.

The Ritz Carlton is located at 4375 Admiralty Way in Marina Del Rey and is known for its art exhibits.

(Note added August 19, 2011: The GOOD news is that Rembrandt’s drawing has been recovered without damage, after thieves abandoned it, likely as the result of publicity of the theft.)
