Here’s to the complacent ones…

… the stodgy, the virus-prone, the “maroons“…. the ones who believe their corporations…. (1)

According to an unscientific (as a former scientist, I can tell you that science has its limitations! 😉 ) survey by Hunch, those Mac vs. PC characterizations in the Apple commercials, as unfair as they seem, appear to have some truth to them! (Hell, I could have TOLD them THAT! 😉 ) The thing that I have noticed personally is, the intelligent, informed people in high tech whom I know, who were using PCs, have gradually “wised up” and moved to Macintosh (or Linux)!

According to the Hunch survey, Mac users tend to be younger (well, my MIND is younger! 😉 The BODIES of biologically successful organisms grow OLDER! :-) and those of biologically UNsuccessful ones, do NOT! 😉 ), more liberal (more libertarian? 😉 ), more fashion-conscious (blue jeans and fashionable T-shirts? :-) ), and more likely to live in cities than people who prefer PCs. (I live in the suburbs, would prefer to live in the “country,” but need the access to cities for the cultural opportunities that they provide.)

Of the 388,000 Hunch users who responded to a question about computer loyalty, 52% were “PC people” and 25% were Mac devotees! It’s hard to believe that there are that many PC diehards, especially after all of the facts that have been published. I will continue to read the article, as I write this, to see whether they have stats on the illiteracy rates of PC users! 😉

Mac users appear to be either (your choice) bolder and more creative, or elitist and more pretentious. Could I throw in – better informed about computer hardware and software systems? :-)

Some 67% of Mac users have a college or advanced degree (yes, I have both), as opposed to 54% of PC users. Mac fans are 80% more likely than PC users to be vegetarians (Sorry, I am a biologist – I have the TEETH of an omnivore, and I eat BOTH meat and vegetables. Evolutionarily speaking [yes, I have even SEEN evolution in the laboratory], consumption of MEAT was in part responsible for the advanced brain development of humans!) Unlike PC users, Mac users would rather ride a Vespa scooter than a Harley! (I ride a Honda Shadow Spirit VT1100C – a Vespa is really NOT up to California highway speeds!) Besides, I ENJOY teaching 4-wheelers about the PHYSICS of acceleration! 😉

According to CNN:

“PC users’ tastes trend towards casual clothes, tunafish sandwiches, white wine, Hollywood movies, USA Today and Pepsi. Mac users prefer designer or vintage duds, hummus, red wine, indie films, The New York Times and (we’re not making this up) San Pellegrino Limonata.”

OK, my clothes are “Silicon Valley casual,” I like my tuna either RAW or seared on a grill, RED wine (but not with fish), Indie films, CNN and CNET online news, and Coke Classic! Designer clothes are for people with MONEY! 😉 I would rather spend money on HARDWARE! :-)

“Mac users also are more likely to describe themselves as computer-savvy and “early adopters.” PC users tend to describe themselves as better at math and less likely to throw frequent parties.”

I am definitely computer savvy ( for an “experienced” :-) guy), and an early adopter (if I can AFFORD to be). I tend to live in the “near future” but have tried hard to live in, and enjoy, the PRESENT! I am VERY good at math, but have had to work at it more than people who are naturally gifted with intuitive math genes (one of my brothers has them). As for parties, I tend NOT to throw frequent ones myself, and prefer more intimate encounters, but I LOVE to attend the parties, receptions, and art shows of others!

Hunch found that, despite Apple’s recent successes, the folks who identify themselves as “PC users” have GROWN from 50% a year and a half ago, to 52% today (no “error bars” on the data!). It’s OK. I prefer QUALITY over quantity!

What can I say?  As an Ohio boy, only that,  “We are Devo!” (devolution [now rejected], but remember that there is a natural selection for genetic deletions [all that DNA replication takes ENERGY!]).

Read more; believe LESS. (… and use a good antivirus and firewall, Mac or [especially] PC!)
