Teen jumps from Golden Gate Bridge – and LIVES!

A California high school student who visited the Golden Gate Bridge this morning climbed over the edge and JUMPED – and survived the 220-foot (67 m) drop into San Francisco Bay. The drop kills dozens of people each year – 32 in 2010 and up to 1500 have been killed since the bridge was constructed in 1937, according to the article.

According to the TV news, the teen’s injuries were limited to a bruised tailbone and a torn lung. Most jumpers die from massive internal injuries, broken bones, internal bleeding, skull fractures, and drowning. TV news reported that the teen jumped “for fun.”

Surfers at the Golden Gate rescued the teen, and an ambulance took him to a San Francisco hospital. Windsor Unified School District Superintendent Bill McDermott said that he does not believe that the teen attempted suicide, but instead jumped after others urged him on!

Someone jumps off the Golden Gate bridge about once every two weeks. Some 98% of those jumps are fatal and most are ruled suicides.

Last fall, $5 million in federal funding was approved for a suicide barrier, a stainless steel net below the span, but the design is not complete, and the installation is at least several years away.
