Guitar Hero video game canceled!

Santa Monica, California-based Activision Blizzard Inc. (which is majority-owned by a French conglomerate, Vivendi SA!) announced today that it will stop publishing the game, Guitar Hero, this year. CNN reports that:

“Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s ‘Guitar Hero‘ business unit and discontinue development on its ‘Guitar Hero’ game for 2011,” the company said in a statement.

The cancellation occurred as the company announced a RECORD operating cash flow of $1.4 billion in 2010. Revenues in 2010 from digital channels grew over 20% to $1.5 billion.

As rock struggled against rap, video games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band were given credit for a new appreciation of rock’n’roll in members of the millennial generation (“millennials”) born in the 1990s. Millennials did not know much about Aerosmith, Pat Benatar and other artists of the 1970s and 1980s.

(And WHOSE fault is THAT…? :-) ) And what about the great rock of the 1960’s… especially the LATE ’60s? (As compared with “Sucking in the Seventies….” :-) )

Geoff Mayfield, senior analyst and director of charts for Billboard magazine, said that a Guitar Hero game that featured the music of Aerosmith resulted in a greater than 40% increase in catalog sales by the band! The game even boosted sales at Guitar Center, a nationwide chain.

So are we now left to rap and hip-hop? Maybe a national day of mourning is mandated. :-)
