iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, to launch February 2

Emailed invitations to the Wednesday debut of The Daily said that Rupert Murdoch, the chairman and CEO of News Corporation, and Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet services, will officially launch the newspaper at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, NY.

The Daily, which will have no print version or Web site, is expected to be available ONLY on iPad and to cost 99 cents a week. The Daily is expected to cover general news, culture, and entertainment, much like a national newspaper.

Richard Branson’s iPad-only magazine, Project, was released in November but has not yet reported statistics on sales. Project will soon go to iPhone and later, to Android devices.

Publishers of books, magazines, and newspapers are hopeful that publications over iPad and other tablets will provide additional revenue for them. For example, Amazon just reported that its sales of electronic books for the Kindle has surpassed its sale of paperback books.
