California Highway Patrol closed The Grapevine today
California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials shut down The Grapevine (a portion of the Ridge Route from Los Angeles [L.A.] to the San Joaquin Valley, indefinitely in BOTH directions, just before 1 PM today as a cold front with chilly rain, heavy snow, and wind gusts to 90 miles/hour (145 km/hour) moved through Southern California, and cars began to slide. Northbound traffic was diverted at Parker Road in Castaic, and southbound traffic was closed from the L.A.–Kern County line. California 14 and 138 were expected to get snow, but those roads remained open.
A winter-storm warning was issued by the National Weather Service through late Monday for mountain regions and the Antelope Valley, with snow levels down to 2,000 feet (610 m) of elevation and accumulations of 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm). Temperatures were expected to drop into the 20’s F (-7 to -1 C) in Antelope Valley and 40’s F ( 4 to 10 C) elsewhere, well into this week.
Up to 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) of rain is expected to fall in the L.A. Basin with winds of 15 to 25 miles/hour (24 to 40 km/hour). High temperatures will be in the 50’s to near 60 F (10 to 16 C).
