In July, Californians crushed the governor’s target for water conservation for the second month in a row! Californians cut water use by 31.3%. The SFGate article continues:

Gov. Jerry Brown’s demand for a 25 percent statewide cut in urban water use. Each of California’s roughly 400 cities and water agencies, for the first time in state history, was ordered in June to trim a specific amount, depending on how much they’ve saved in the past. The reductions vary between 4 percent and 36 percent over the baseline year of 2013, the year before Brown declared a drought emergency for California.

ALL San Francisco Bay Area water suppliers hit their targets, avoiding $500/day fines for noncompliance and cease and desist orders carrying $10,000-a-day penalties! Water reductions became mandatory in June, after California residents struggled for a year-and-a-half with voluntary reductions.

Among the highlights:

…Santa Rosa, which cut 43.8 percent, and the massive San Jose Water Company, which trimmed 38 percent, the data show.

“People are realizing the seriousness of the situation and they’re acting accordingly,” said John Tang, spokesman for the San Jose Water Company, which serves nearly 1 million South Bay residents.

San Francisco, meanwhile, recorded a 15 percent drop in water use in July, and the East Bay Municipal Utility District, serving Alameda and Contra Costa counties, notched a 31 percent decrease.

The new data shows that 290 of 402 communities hit their targets, or were within 1 percent, in July.

That’s up from June when 265 of about 400 met their benchmarks. Statewide, urban water users cut 27.3 percent that month.

I have written about WATER many times in this Blog, starting with “It’s about water…” in October of 2007. California will ALWAYS be about water. You can read about the amazing California Aqueduct for distributing water, in my November 2009 Blog entry.

Great job on water conservation, California! I am proud of (most of) us!
