Coronado Beach named “best beach in America”
According to Dr. Beach’s Top 10 List 2012, Coronado Beach in Coronado, California has taken top honors as the best beach in America for 2012! Signicantly (and STRANGELY! 
), this is the first time that a California beach has placed first since the list began in 1991! (hmmmmmmmm…..) The real identity of the beach doctor perhaps explains why…. He is Stephen Leatherman, director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, and I’d like to invite the dear doctor to spend more time on California’s beaches! 😉
Actually, I need to spend more time on California’s beaches, myself (but sand is not the best thing for laptop keyboards)! 😉
“The beach is popular for swimmers, surfers, sunbathers and beachcombers,” Leatherman writes about the San Diego-area spot. “The beach is very flat, making it great for skim boarding and walking, and the sand has a silvery sheen because of the presence of mica.”
But Leatherman looks beyond pretty. He weighs 50 criteria that include water quality, sand texture, public safety and environmental issues.
The beach is a 1.5-mile strip of sand tuns along Ocean Boulevard in Coronado, past the historic Hotel Del Coronado (photo above; It’s HAUNTED, of course!) which I wrote about in June of 2008 and again in February of 2011. Some 15 U.S. Presidents have stayed in the Hotel Del Coronado, as well as other notable guests ranging from Charlie Chaplin to Thomas Edison to Babe Ruth to Charles Lindbergh! The hotel has appeared in a collection of Hollywood movies!
