High CAMP, near Brentwood!

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Dublin police, San Ramon police and Walnut Creek police working as part of the state-run Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) task force made a 6 AM bust and netted 14,792 marijuana plants, most of which were at least six feet high, in the 4600 block of Orwood Road in unincorporated Contra Costa County near Brentwood today. The pot had an estimated value of $30 million. At least 20% of the plants were apparently removed prior to the discovery.

The marijuana was planted methodically every 10 feet in place of corn plants that were pulled out of the ground so that it could take advantage of the cornfield’s existing irrigation system. The marijuana was planted on more than 100 acres on three different properties, including one in San Joaquin County.

The authorities found an encampment for about four people and squatters who fled the area before authorities arrived.

(Note added October 1, 2010: Today, Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger unexpectedly signed a bill into law that makes possession of up to an ounce of marijuana an infraction, rather than a misdemeanor, similar to traffic tickets and littering tickets. Schwarzenegger opposes Proposition 19, the marijuana initiative, which will be before voters next month. Governor Schwarzenegger cited the need to reduce spending on prosecution and the courts as a reason for signing the bill into law. The law takes effect immediately.)
