San Jose: Stolen iPad leads to $35 million crystal meth bust
They should have just purchased one!
A single, stolen iPad led police to The Woods apartment complex on Snell Ave in San Jose, and to one of the largest amounts of methamphetamine ever seized in the United States. According to Assistant District Attorney David Tomkins, the police tracked the iPad by GPS! Since the police did not have a search warrant, they knocked on the door and asked permission to enter. The occupants allowed them to come in.
What police found inside was indeed a surprise – 780 pounds of crystal meth, worth about $35 million!
District Attorney Jeff Rosen noted that roughly 100 pounds of methamphetamine are confiscated per month, on average, in the county, so this bust was equivalent to about six months worth of the drug. Police immediately arrested three people, whom they did not identify Saturday. The DA’s Major Narcotic Vendor Prosecution unit was contacted to draw up a search warrant.
Chemists from the Drug Enforcement Administration performed initial tests and boxed up the drugs for transport to the lab for additional analysis. The amount of drug seized, mostly finished product but some D-methamphetamine, would fit into a space about the size of a walk-in closet.
