Estonia Update
I blogged awhile ago about an episode of Wired Science that covered, among other stories, the partial shutdown of Estonia by computer attack. Estonia (called “E-stonia” by some) is heavily reliant on Internet-based transactions for basic services like food, water, and gas, as well as other financial services, voting, and many other activities. I saw these updates (1, 2) on the conviction last week of a 20-year-old ethnic Russian (Dmitri Galushkevich) for his involvement in a “cyber-war” on Estonia between April 25 and May 4 of 2007. The man is a student and had no prior criminal record. Galushkevich was the first individual to be tried over the cyber-attacks. He was fined the equivalent of $1600 and admitted his guilt. Four other men are being held for activities during the spring riots.
