Shocking! :-)
Can blue be “green?”
Although the Honda Fit is “pretty darn green,” a concept car (blue) shown at the 2010 Los Angeles auto show may be “greener” still! Honda showed a concept version of an electric Fit, called the Fit EV!
Honda used an electric motor similar to that it developed for the Clarity fuel cell vehicle and a lithium ion battery pack. The Fit EV will travel, with a top speed of 90 mph (Woooooo Hoooooooo!), for 100 miles between recharges (about the distance that I traveled round trip each day between Livermore and Cupertino, when I was a Netscape guy based at Apple).
A driver of the Fit EV can choose one of three modes of driving: Eco, Normal, and Sport. Honda claims that the Fit EV has the acceleration of a 2-liter gas engine, in Sport mode!
Have mercy, Miss Percy! But when it comes to engines, Honda should know!
Charging times are under 12 hours with a 120-volt outlet and under 6 hours with a 240-volt outlet. The grill of the Fit EV was closed off, and the headlight casing were redesigned for even better aerodynamics, but the interior is unchanged. Drivers will be able to monitor charging status on smartphones, on the Web, and on a special remote.
Production is slated for 2012!
(Note added November 18, 2010: And in the “Who cares?” department, the Volvo C30 is ALSO electric….)
