Snow on the devil mountain
I was totally unprepared for what I saw this morning at 7:30 on the way to an assignment. In a clear blue sky, the only clouds present formed a wreath around the summit of Mount Diablo (1). Beneath that wreath, there was visible snow about halfway down the mountain!
“It’s too early!” my brain screamed.
I don’t recall “snow on Diablo” being in anyone’s forecast, but there it was! I say “was” because, when I finished the assignment at 11:15, the snow was already gone. The summit of the mountain was clear of clouds. The wreath had seemingly dissipated into small cumulus clouds that were strewn across the sky!
Autumn leaves are at about their peak color in the Bay Area right now. Those of us who pay dearly to be spoiled by the mild weather here sometimes do not want to be reminded of the snows and blizzards that have already visited the upper Midwest. I remarked just yesterday to a hardware store clerk, in a typically Californian way, “When I want snow, I know where to go to find it!”
I did not expect to find it on Mount Diablo this morning.
Maybe, in this year that had virtually “no summer,” winter will hold some surprises for us as well!
