Free Entry to ALL U.S. National Parks April 17 – 25

Wooooooooo! Hooooooooooo! Great News!

Not just for those of us who live in the United States, but for anyone who is visiting, ESPECIALLY for you Europeans who are “grounded” because a volcano in Iceland has you “down” in the United States….

I have to thank my brother in Ohio for bringing the news to my attention.

Today is the beginning of National Park Week, and entrance to ALL 392 National Parks (85 million acres [344,000 km²]) in the U.S. is FREE from today through Sunday, April 25!

Oh, by the way, the waterfalls (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, [all of the photos in this blog entry are April shots]), even the ephemeral ones coming off North Dome, are SPECTACULAR in Yosemite in April! :-) You lucky stranded travelers in Northern California…! :-) (And the Point Reyes National Seashore [1, 2] is pretty cool, too…!)

The National Park Service, along with its nonprofit partner, the National Park Foundation extends a special invitation to Share a Park and Shape a Life by helping a young person experience the National Parks and develop the responsibility of stewardship. Saturday, April 24, is Junior Ranger Day, and the Web page has links to National Parks with Junior Ranger Programs as well as MANY resources for TEACHERS and KIDS and DATA SETS for everybody! (Everybody LOVES a good data set! 😉 )

Some featured events are Revolutionary Times Weekend in Morristown National Historical Park, NJ, Hike with a Ranger! at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, HI, Spring 2010 Special Event: Tidepooling at Duxbury Reef at Point Reyes National Seashore, here in California, Junior Ranger Day – French Quarter Visitor Center in Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, LA, and a Volunteer Opportunity: Elkmont Nature Trail Community Service Project in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC and TN.

Additional events can be found by state and park. You can find places to volunteer or donate HERE.

In addition, :-) there are special offers by National Park Concessioners, including the California parks: Death Valley National Park, Sequoia National Park, and Yosemite National Park. This Web page has yet another link to MORE offers from gateway communities and friends groups.

So what are we waiting for? Let’s GET OUT THERE! :-)
