Near-record marijuana eradication in Santa Clara County

Following up on the theme of an earlier blog entry of mine on dangers to hikers in the Sequoia National Forest from Mexican drug cartels and a TV news story last night…

Santa Clara County officials are about to set a new record for eradicating marijuana plants, after two more raids this week. Authorities conduct annual raids of pot farms, beginning in summer and continuing through the fall, when the plants are harvested.

Yesterday’s raid in the Los Gatos foothills, at the pot farm located about 3 miles from the Los Gatos Rowing Club, yielded 8000 marijuana plants. On Wednesday, officers eradicated about 3000 plants at a pot farm in the east foothills near Mount Hamilton. During the raid in the Los Gatos foothills, police officers encountered 3 men, all of whom attempted to flee. One suspect was taken into custody and was identified as Claudio Barrera-Arrellano, age 22, of Denair, southeast of Modesto.

According to Sergeant Don Morrissey, spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department, the department has eradicated close to 150,000 marijuana plants this year and is close to setting a new record.
