SF homeowner wrestles gun away from robber!
A homeowner’s own garage security camera captured the homeowner wrestling a gun away from a robber during a thwarted home invasion robbery in the Outer Sunset District. What, you say? How can there be an armed home invader in a city with a set of the toughest gun control laws in the nation? It’s pretty simple, really. Criminals don’t obey the laws. That is why they are criminals. The San Francisco Police Department released the video, which is on the SFGate.com site. I don’t think that anyone would advocate taking the actions taken by the homeowner, actions that could have ended tragically. (Of course, NOT taking any action could have ended tragically, too! In California, we glorify victims and give them “candlelight vigils.”) SFGate.com says:
The attempted home invasion took place on Monday, Sept. 28, at 8:45 a.m. in the 1300 block of La Playa Street in the Outer Sunset, according to police. The resident had opened the garage door to bring in his recycling bin. When he came back inside, he was charged from behind by a man with dreadlocks wearing a gray hoodie.
The video shows the assailant getting a hammerlock on the victim and pulling out a gun as the two careen out of sight in the garage — but when they come back into view the victim is gaining the advantage. They sprawl on the concrete floor as the target of the assault tries to pin down his attacker and get control of the gun. About 80 seconds into the video he succeeds. No more is seen of the assailant, who apparently ran off.
Home invasions of this sort are unusual in this corner of the Outer Sunset near Golden Gate Park: “We don’t know why this victim was targeted, or if it was a crime of opportunity,” said Manfredi, who described the suspect as a black male, older, with dreadlocks. “We want to make sure the assailant is taken off the streets. Even if he doesn’t have this gun, he may have another one.”
According to Officer Carlos Manfredi, a police spokesman, “the gun had no bullets, or no magazine was attached.” Well, police HAVE the gun – WHICH WAS IT? Or was it loaded and the police can’t get their story straight…?
If you have information about the assault, please contact San Francisco Police Department’s tip line at (415) 575-4444. The 93-second security video can be viewed at https://youtu.be/f7unUyPU8vA.
