KGO-TV News team robbed of camera equipment at gunpoint Friday afternoon in Oakland!
A KGO-TV news team accompanied by a security guard were robbed by three men, at least one of whom had a gun, in broad daylight in West Oakland, the latest in a group of robberies targeting the media. The robbers took camera equipment. None of the victims were injured. A station official did not respond to a request for comment.
Several workers in news media have robbed in Oakland in recent months. Some of the robberies occurred in the middle of the day. In November, a KPIX news cameraman was punched and robbed during a live broadcast while shooting outside a high school. Since the incident, security guards accompany news teams covering stories in Oakland, day or night. One of the guards is a former Oakland police officer.
KGO-TV crews have also been shadowed by security guards in Oakland, including when they were covering a fatal officer-involved shooting in East Oakland, the killing of a man near the Oakland-Emeryville border and the shooting death of a dog walker in East Oakland.
In May, thieves stole personal items from a KGO-TV news van at Jack London Square as well as from a car belonging to the crew’s security guard, a former San Francisco police officer.
