Riverside County Mountain Fire burns 1,000 acres and is only 5% contained

Riverside County firefighters continue to battle a wildfire this evening near the mountain community of Idyllwild that has grown rapidly to 1,000 acres and caused the evacuation of two communities. The fire, dubbed the Mountain Fire is only 5% contained and has damaged structures, although officials do not yet know the extent or number. The fire was reported shortly before 2 pm today near the intersection of California highway 243 and 74, portions of which have now been closed.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for the communities of Bonita Vista (about 20 homes) and Fleming Ranch (about four homes) and the Living Free Animal Sanctuary. No injuries have been reported.

Fire officials said that more than 300 firefighters are engaged, with 12 fire crews, four helicopters and six air tankers. The CAL FIRE Web site says that the total number of fire personnel is 421 and that 47 fire engines, three dozers, and nine water tenders are also involved.
