California gun sales rise; gun injuries and deaths fall!

According to statistics collected by the California Attorney General‘s office and the California Department of Public Health and reported in the Sacramento Bee, deaths and injuries attributed to firearms have dropped SHARPLY in California, even as the number of guns sold in California have risen. The article in the Bee presents bar graphs of the data over the last 10 years, showing that gun dealers in California sold 600,000 firearms in 2011, up from 350,000 in 2002. During that same period, the number of California hospitalizations due to gun injuries declined from about 4,000 annually to 2,800, a roughly 25 percent drop, according to hospital records. Firearm-related fatalities fell from around 3,200 annually to about 2,800 – roughly an 11% drop!

Most of the decline in firearm-related deaths and injuries can be explained by a nationwide, well-documented decrease in violent crime.

As the number of suicide deaths that involved firearms has remained roughly constant, even the number of accidental deaths and injuries involving firearms in California has ALSO declined.
