The worm turns…
… even uglier.
The latest Conficker (AKA Kido; AKA Downadup) worm, Conficker.C shuts down security services, blocks computers from connecting to security sites, and downloads a Trojan. The new version is also programmed to connect to 50,000 different domains on April 1 for updated copies of the worm or other malware. According to the CNET article cited, the first two versions exploit a vulnerability that Microsoft patched in October 2008.
The Conficker worm has reportedly grounded Rafale fighter aircraft of the French Navy and has spread rapidly to many computers (I think that the CNET article is missing three zeroes and should read “10,000,000” instead of “10,000” computers, on the basis of earlier numbers.
Windows users should apply the Microsoft patch and update antivirus software. Free Conficker removal tools were announced this week by the Enigma Software Group and BitDefender, according to the CNET article, which also states that Microsoft has offered a $250,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the Conficker case.
Symantec has historical and technical details in the Downadup Codex (PDF).
I am still happy to be using a Mac.
