Beach volleyball star, Kerri Walsh, gets hometown send-off!
Yesterday, beach volleyball icon, Kerri Walsh, got a big send-off to the London Olympic Games from her hometown of Saratoga, California, (born in Santa Clara) just days after she qualified for her fourth Olympics! Walsh REALLY wants another gold medal. It was the first time that Saratoga organized a farewell party for Walsh, 33, a former Archbishop Mitty and Stanford star. The Santa Cruz Sentinel article quotes her:
“I want to be deserving of a welcome home party,” said Walsh, who with partner Misty May-Treanor is a two-time defending Olympic champion.
Her father, Tim Walsh recounted how shy his daughter was at Mitty when honored in the mid-1990s.
Now based in the Los Angeles area, she spent the day in Saratoga with family and friends starting with a rally at Wildwood Park in the morning that included city officials. Later in the day she joined an unveiling of a piece of art as part of Oakley’s Beyond Reason campaign.
The painting of Walsh will be displayed at the London Design Museum on July 26 — the night before the opening ceremony. Later it will be auctioned off to support Walsh’s Chase the Stars Foundation.
Walsh and May-Treanor have another event, the final Swatch World Tour event in Gstaad, Switzerland, BEFORE the Summer Olympics. The duo has struggled to regain their dominance since taking time off after the Beijing Games.
“We need to get back to what we do best,” Walsh said. “The next couple weeks is getting back to who we are.”
